Port of New York Customs House

Greetings all,

I am seeking more information on one of my 3rd great-grandfather John L. Rohner's many occupations. According to his obituary, he worked at the Port of New York Customs House under Collector Thomas Murphy between 1868 and 1886, eventually being ousted for "political reasons." While working at the Customs House, he lived with his wife and children in Hoboken, NJ.

The Alexander Hamilton Customs House, which is usually what I get on Google, was built in the 20th century so that's obviously not where he worked. My theory is that he would've worked at Federal Hall at Nassau and Wall St. I also am wondering what kind of job/title he could have had, since that isn't stated in the obituary (currently my only resource on his job history). And if there are any employment records from the Customs House available, I would love to be pointed in their direction.

Any tips or leads are very much appreciated!
