Hi Scott,
Where are you located ? I actually live in Nottingham, about 2 houses from the old Leathers homestead. That's why I was intrigued when I saw a bulletin board reference about a supposed scandal. The Leathers grave yard is out in the woods, just down the road from me too.
I was Town Clerk here for about 10 years and saw the Leathers name quite often in old documents.
Recently, I ran across the information that Bartlett Leathers was among the first settlers in Exeter, ME. I am helping a friend whose grandfather was born in Exeter, ME (orphaned) and raised by a minister. We are trying to find out who the grandfather's parents were (and sibings, if any).
My guess is that Bartlett Leathers was really named Philip Bartlett Leathers, although I have not taken time to prove that theory yet. PBL may have been his father or grandfather. Do you have a birthdate for Bartlett ?
Let's see, what can I add ... well, the Bartletts were another early, influential, family here. Very likely his mother was a Bartlett if that is his given or middle name. Let's get in touch directly. Maybe we can help one another through this.
