Hi Patsy & Thomas,
Just a note on loyalists'. In order to prove your loyalist ancestor, they must have been granted land before 1790; and arrived from the US after or during the American Revolution. If the father received land grants, the sons as [sons-of-a-loyalist;] also received their own land grants, if they were of age. This was the case of Loyalist Benjamin Stymiest II; his son Benj. III also received land in Miramichi, NB. Have proven this line; as well as Philip Hierlihy, another loyalist; am now working on Urquhart and about 7 others I trace my lineage from.
Some land grants are recognized if as Thomas says, they were fighting for the British, and therefore were also eligible for land grants.
As genealogist for the Vancouver UELAC, Patsy, let me know the ancestor (loyalists) name and I will search in my loyalist datafiles; which has been compiled by the Canadian Loyalists' Association of Canada. Although it is not complete, by any means, as new ancestors are being proven every year.
Cheers,
Carl Stymiest, UE
