Hi Cynthia, Lois Grant is my mother and I know your name from Scotty and Lois' many discussions about her book. I am trying to get some information on the ship, The Pearl, and hence found my way to this website. I am reading Days into Decade again and offer this paragraph regarding Big John ..."Among the families of Grants aboard the Pearl that fall was that of Big John the Robber who had paid so dearly for his part in the Rising of 1745. Big John was now past his prime, his health in a weakened state because of his years spent in slavery in the West Indies. His son Angus, who had been a small child at the time of Culloden, was in charge of the family party. Angus was married to Ellen Macdonell of the Leek whose father was Captain Archibald Macdonell and whose brothers were the leaders of the expedition." This is somewhat vague and it suggests that Big John did not make it back to North America. However, in looking at the family tree in the book, page 229, Lois shows "John Grant of Glenmoriston (d. circa 1780, probably in New York). So, indeed, Lois and Scotty must have concluded that Big John did come back over on Pearl.
Would love to hear from you ... feel free to drop me an e-mail. Nancy
