Check National Archives as they have a record for him dated approx. 1950.
Due to privacy laws there probably isn't a lot you can find out about him.
Although he would be in his 80's if still alive, he could still be alive, so we cannot discuss him on these boards.
Try searching NSW BDM (just google) and use variants of his surname or the wildcard as I notice on Ryerson index some changed to VARGAS.
Also google for cemeteries close to the known areas for him (many have searchable database online now)
