The reason I started this research was because we were always told that we had Cherokee blood. Then someone told me that we were from a tribe that starts with an S but she couldn't remember the tribe. She said the tribe was from Kentucky. Kentucky is where many of my ancestors were from.
Census data sometimes has the family as mulatto, sometimes black and sometimes white. The first thing I was told when I got online was that my family was Melungeon. I have asked everybody in my family and none of them ever heard the word Melungeon before. Most researchers put Brison Gibson in the melungeon catagory. My great grandma Edith Gipson daughter of Ira Gipson married John Cornwell grandson of Hezekiah(Kiah)Gipson. Ira and Kiah were brothers and sons of Brison Gipson. So whatever they were that blood is strong on my grandmothers side. I have been researching for 7 years and haven't come to a conclusion about what our ancestors ethnicity is.
