I just discovered this a couple of days ago as it was mentioned on a thread. I'M IN LOVE! It essentially will replace the spreadsheet I started last fall to manage my, my mom's and my brother's kits. After 80 hours of massaging data from FTDNA, Ancestry and GEDMatch, it became time for me to update with new matches and I was completely burnt out and didn't do squat over the winter. After compiling over 36,000 rows, I was filled with absolute dread going through the motions again.

As I am looking for my dad's birth family, Genome Mate is much, much faster and easier than the spreadsheet I kept. I didn't find the data too difficult to load - although I've learn a couple of things:

I think my home internet connection was strangling the dnagedcom downloads. I was able to download them without incident from work. The only thing I can think of is that there is much better bandwidth there (although I have high speed cable).

Also, having a lot of problems with FTDNA on Chrome. The sorts, filters and Chrome browser were hanging up and returning no results. But running FTDNA on IE solved that problem.

I first uploaded my data from all sources at the 7 cM minimum. Currently, I'm going through all my matches using my Mom's FTDNA Chrome Browser and doing a one-to-one comparison with her kit at GEDMatch. This lets me set the match as maternal or paternal - depending on whether she is matching to them or not, then I'm updating all matches across all profiles. Then I'll go through the same motions with my brother's profile - using my Mom's FTDNA and GEDMatch kits to identify maternal and paternal matches. Any updates will be made to his profile only. This should help me find additional paternal matches that I may not share paternal DNA with, but my brother does. Finally, I'll go through Mom's profile and see if I can separate her matches into her maternal and paternal buckets using the xDNA list that Genome Mate provides. But since Mom's line is pretty well researched, any research I do on her ancestry is going to be just to get beyond a couple of brick walls. The real prize here is to find my dad's birth family.

In just the past couple of days, I think what I want to see from Genome Mate is the ability to show all matching segments across all chromosomes for a particular match. I'll have to review the videos again to see if this can be done. I'd also like to see some reporting and export functions (i.e., export possible common ancestors and surnames) so I can sort surnames by matches. Right now, that is a manual undertaking that I have not yet embarked upon, although it's on my list. I need to see if my paternal matches are showing a pattern of surnames because all I have now is my brother's yDNA 36/67 match and my dad's adoption papers with his birth mother's name on it (which may or may not be her real name), and no concrete evidence she was even from the area he was born.

I was able to snag a few paternal match's gedcoms from FTDNA using a tool, and will be importing them sometime in the future into Genome Mate, but haven't put together that plan yet.
