Yes that is true,thanks. However it has remained fairly untained for many generations. Even my primary sources are correct, yet my ancestor was illiterate. Only one doc used a different spelling x for f and given the bad handwriting encounted this is fairly good. Most of the errors are in transcripts. I had to correct the online census last time I was on here in Feb. I had a copy of the original census for over 25 yrs directly from GRO. The new transcripts were outrageous. We know to look at the common errors s for f but would never have found these in a million years.
Having said that I have a lot of trouble when using the name to support services and have to spell it out a dozen times. My cousins say the same. So it is more remarkable that my illiterate ancestor's records have been correct and it is not that I have missed other spellings as no need to look at alternative spellings although I do. A reminder that I must not get complacent.
