Related two different ways? Or another explanation?

Got back my wife's DNA results a month ago. It shows a second cousin, meaning that they have great grandparents in common. I have tried to contact this person through Ancestry, but no reply as of yet. I have researched both family trees, and there are no common great grandparents or any other links, so I have to conclude that there must have been an out-of-wedlock union somewhere. I contacted my wife's third cousin who also had his DNA done through Ancestry. He does indeed show up as her third cousin via DNA match - their great grandfathers were brothers. However, the mysterious second cousin shows up as his fifth cousin or greater. I think what this means is that my wife is related to this second cousin in more than one way. If my wife's great grandfather was also the mysterious second cousin's great grandfather, then this person and my wife's third cousin would also be third cousins (boy this is complicated). I would not be surprised if they were related two ways - my wife's family were farmers in rural Poland, then Wisconsin, and usually married people from the next farm over. Her ethnicity accrding to DNA is 96% Europe East. Any ideas?
