There was an episode of PBS' "Finding Your Roots" in which one of the people discovered she was descended from a group in Mexico know as "Crypto-Jews" - Jews from Europe who continued to practice their religion in secret, but publicly were Catholics.

They formed communities and stuck together as best as they could, so there could be more to your percentage of Jewish DNA than genetic noise.
