If you are concerned about consolidation then fixing merge and tree hint issues should be a priority.

I am currently offered tree hints for someone who apparently lived their entire life in England while I am also offered hints at the same time for a person who lived their entire life in the U.S. These hints have been offered by ancestry and it is solely ancestry's responsibility for the selection of which profiles are offered at the same time. Any consolidation of this information is nonsense.

I don't merge trees or copy trees but if I did I would know that I should only choose the best person profile to merge with however the majority of people do not know this and merge all the trees offered. In addition, even if they chose the best one the information that shows up may not accurately represent the original tree. Years ago I put in Dry Creek Valley for a place near Healdsburg, CA. This same location may be found on documents with about 10 different names for the area, none of which are currently in use. Since I did not create my tree with the intent of it being merged I did not realize this would happen. I discovered that the Dry Creek was being translated by the merge process into Dry Creek, Virginia which led to several trees having someone die in CA and being buried in Virginia. Obviously, I changed how I did things but most people do not create their trees with the intent of them being merged. They create them with the intent of them being viewed. Copiers do not even have to view a tree to merge it and twenty others to create a fictional being.

Fix the merge, fix the hints, fix the relationship calculator, teach and mentor people in both the easy parts and the difficult parts of the tools and let them have the tools they need. If Ancestry is not going to provide the tools to study the actual chromosome and wants to rely on their analysis and then hints with trees...then you have to address issues that affect that. Ancestry is creating a problem it will regret. More and more people are becoming convinced that ancestry has no merit for evidence. Clues yes, evidence no. Perception can matter.
