Some people are quite passionate about how one company is better than another. I take it more that there are bonuses and minuses to each company. Personally I have done all of my autosomal tests at Ancestry and then loaded the data over to both FTDNA (for a fee) and GedMAtch (free). That way I get the most possible matches for the least amount of money (especially if I wait for the sales price for transfers). At this point I will continue to do that. The only problem is that for some people (especially elderly) it is harder to do a spit test -- in that case the cheek swab at FTDNA is easier.
Here is a site that gives you some data about all the various testing companies for autosomal:
http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_c...Does the FF test more SNPs than Ancestry? Yes. Does it matter? Depends upon who you talk to. To me it does not.
Given that it is truly best if as many people in a family are tested as possible (due to the lovely random nature of genetic recombination) it can be quite a price difference to always test at 2 different companies.
So alot of it depends upon what you want out of the testing and how many people you think you will be ultimately testing and how much money you have to spend on this type of research.
