"Why would X DNA show on the M account but not on the F?"

On FTDNA you have to download your X chromosome data separately and then upload to Gedmatch. Not everyone does that. On 23andMe it's included in the data set.

I would say that giving priority to those surnames in your X DNA pattern would be a good way to start.
