Many thanks for your reply and for the details.
I have been to Wardsend several times but unfortunately I won't be able to make the walk on Saturday. I have been on one before led by Peter Quincy who I also see each year at the family history fair in Low Bradfield. Dave Yates has also been great in giving me help in the past.
Incidentally a tall monument not far up the path from the steps is for Joseph Askham, one of the many people who died in the aftermath of the flood.
