Hi
I remember the train derailment very well. I was about 10 when it happened and I can remember my mom yelling to my dad that there was a fire. My dad thought my mom meant there was a fire in the bedroom (she was watching t.v. in there) and went running in. He realized she meant that there was a reflection on the building next door. They went out late that night and headed towards Mavis Road where they were met by a firefighter running away from Mavis who told them to get out of there and that the tanker was going to blow. We evacuated the next day. I have a copy of the front page of the Toronto Sun from that day. It is a glossy page copied and handed out at Square One in the weeks after we returned home.
The Toronto Sun, Toronto, Ontario, Monday, November 12, 1979
"250,000 FLEE" (across the picture)
Caption: "Intense heat from train derailment explosion and fire threatens chlorine tank car"
"Tank car 'bomb' of deadly chlorine gas forces evacuation of Mississauga area"
Along the side of this page that was given out at Square One there is a caption that reads "This acknowledges your participation in the largest evacuation without loss of life or injury in thehistory of North America. November 11 - 16, 1979
