Am an author writing a novel about early one room schools in SE Kansas in the 1800's. Family legend places a great aunt as a teacher in that area at that time.

I plan to use the legend of Quantrell or Quantrill of(Quantrell's Raiders) stopping there long enough to have himself, and all of his men, each learn to write his own names. Can anyone confirm this legend? It would be nice to be able to state it as fact.
