I am looking for information about a James Polk, 51 years old, born Ohio, who is listed in the penitenuary on the 1860 census for Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN (line 37) for murder.
He was born 1/11/1810 in Clinton Co., OH and died 3/27/1896 in an infirmary in Faytettte Co., OH although his residence was in Wilson Twp., Clinton County., OH.
I've traced him through the censuses in Clinton Co., OH and wondered why his wife Maranda (nee Bentley), two children Liberty B. and Gayle Ann, and mother (Hannah nee Hobson Polk) were living together in Wilson Twp., Clinton Co., OH (surname listed as 'Pope' on that census) without him in 1860 and did a broader search after a tip off from another family member that he went to prison for 'something'. I'm trying to (1) verify that this James Polk in the penitinuary is indeed our family and also (2) details of his crime.
Can anyone help?
