My grandfather Francis Starrett went to South AFrica in 1899 with the RIC to fight in the Boer War. He joined the South African Constabulary (No 3279 3rd Class Tpr S.A.C.) after his one year contract with the RIC was up and got an honourable discharge after two years of service.
