My Grandfather once told me about an ancestor of ours that during the Civil War robbed and and killed people for his own personal gain and that the rest of the family (except for his mother as far as I know)of this ancestor's family after learning what he had done were so ashamed of him that they changed their last name to Cantrell I done some research at the libary where I live and found a book about a man named William Clarke Quantrill and that was the ancestor that my Grandfather was talking about he was the leader of a gang of outlaws that numbered at onetime in as many as 300 men and some of the Quantrill had an ancestor that was a pirate in the carribean but this ancestors name has been lost to history some of the more famous names of Quantrill's gang (which was known as Quantrill's Raiders) were Frank and Jessie James,Jim and Cole Younger and John Westley Hardden I believe the book ststed that Quantrill self promoted himself to the rank of Coloniel while in the confederate army but before joining the confederate army he was a cattel rustler and horse thief who stole cattel and horses from people and then he would go to the owners and would offer to track down the stolen livestock for a reward and upon recieving this reward would return the livestock to the owners when Quantrill was a child he attened school at which his father was the prencapal he (Quantrill) would hide frogs and small snakes in his pocket and throw them on the other kids he would tie two cats together by their tails with a string or rope and throw them over a clothes line and watch them fight and clae themselves to death he would tourcher other small animals also and would stab livestock with a knife just to see how they would react and to watch them bleed later on he quit school but as able to become a teacher of a school because of his high intellagence level he had an uncle that was abuseve to his wife (the uncle's wife) and despite his abusive and unfaithfulness to his wife she would always take him back he even spent some time in jail but his wife was allowed to come and stay the night with him in his jail cell which she would do after William Clarke Quantrill's death the Govenor of his home state where his mother still lived would not at first allow his body to be burried in the state but after a long time of begging and pleading and letter writing the Govenor allowed his (Quantrill's) mother to bring Quantrill's body back to his and hers home state to be burried it was also rumored that his skull was stolen from his grave at his final resting place and was sold to an Ivey League school faturnity and it was used as an initiation ritual I hope this bit of information is helpful and was what u were looking for
