I would try and search the 'Trove' website that I gave you. I only had a quick look. James seems like he was an interesting person, so hopefully you may find more info that way. The only other things I can think of, is that he either changed his name (many ex convicts did this unofficially) or moved to the mainland. You can try to search passenger ship records from Hobart/Launceston to Melbourne, Sydney or Perth as these three arrival ports were the most popular.
