I'm sure it was all made up; it seems to be combining the idea that last names tend to come from someone's occupation or where they lived with the concept of ancestry.com's hints. In reality I think you'd need way more than leaf-clicks to uncover such an origin story.

Though if it is at all grounded in a discovery someone really made (if not exactly how it happened), I'd love to hear the whole story and how they discovered it.
