Hi Cinda,
Welcome to the family. I am delighted to hear from you. We have been working through Oregon Department of Humman Services and don't have a lot of information on Mable or the Zink family, most of it was included in my posting. We know that Mable was sent home from school in the 3rd grade with instructions not to return as the school was unable to teach her due to a learning disability. She stayed home untill her parents died. Julius Edward Zink "Ed" and Hazel E Hewitt Zink died in 1938. Mable was married at age 19 to Benny Bass an older man and a cousin. Benny was sterile. She abandoned him and her first born child. Mable went on to have 7 more children fathered by different men over a time span of 18 years. All of whom where taken from her after she became involved with public welfare in 1961 starting with the eldest. They were not all taken at the same time. Before welfare she worked as farm labor in the Albany area. Her last known address was Jefferson Oregon. In March 1969 she and her 2 youngest children were victims of a drunk driver. They were hit while walking along side the road. The children George Jr and Nancy were placed in emergency foster care and later adopted into different family's. Mable was placed in a nursing home to convalesce, we thought she had died due to injurys caused in the accident. We were very suprised to learn that she had remarried in 1971 and may still be living. Mable's first husband Benny Bass died in 1970.
The Zink family homesteaded in Scio Oregon and a brother Zink homesteaded next door. I don't have any dates, but I belive the farm was sold at some time before 1945 when Mable married. I found an obiturary for an older sister who had been sickly most of her 20 years. I neglected to get a copy of it but I did write down some information. Some family members names were listed including parent's, Mable and 2 brothers, Otis Lester Zink (deceased)and Leeroy Clinton Zink. Uncle Leeroy says that Uncle Otis was killed by a jealous husband. Yes, Uncle Leeroy is still alive and lives in Salem Oregon. His phone is listed, 503-399-2245. He's nice and enjoyed my call. He meet sister Nancy for lunch and he has picture's!!!! You can reach Nancy at Nancy_boaz1965@yahoo.com. You can contact me, Diana, at gdstuart@charter.net.
We are still working with Humman Service's and now are at the point of asking the courts to open the adoption records. Of corse this takes time so stay in touch.
