Hi Brian & Bonney
My Mother was Dennis Brian Chadwick's biological Mother. I watched a two part story on 29th & 30th of December 2014 on ABC TV, about Jan Russ [casting agent for the TV show Neighbors] who had to give up her baby for adoption years ago. That prompted me to Google "Dennis Brian Chadwick" & "William Verdon Barrier Chadwick" and to my surprise I found a couple of posts dated 2010 on Ancestry's Message Board.
I am quite sure that my Mother [who died in 2003] was the biological Mother of your Father, Dennis Brian Chadwick because when his adopted father William Verdon Barrier Chadwick died, my Mother gave me the funeral notice from the Advertiser Newspaper, in tears and said at least she now knew Dennis her other son was alright. My Siblings & I were aware that our Mother had another child, as my Mother told my twin sister, & I when we were 17, when our brother, had a serious car accident and nearly died. At the time of my Mother reading the funeral notice, my Mother told me to put the newspaper cutting away in a safe place, but did not tell me what to do with it. I kept it and when my Mother passed away I did some investigating and found that Dennis had passed away not that long before my Mother. I spoke to my first cousin [who is about 15 years older than myself] as she knew my Mother had a previous baby before she was married to my Father, and she said I should "let sleeping dogs lie", as he and his family probably did not know he was adopted and this could cause distress to them.
My Mother knew who adopted her son as I believe it was legally arranged by their family doctor.
My Mother did not want to give up her son but was forced to by her Mother. My Grandparents, my two Uncles [& their families] and my Mother moved from the country to Adelaide during WW2. Our Mother in her 20's did have a boyfriend who was killed in the war & then in her late 20's met a man [your biological father] who was in the Air force and who said he was from interstate. They were married and eleven [11] months later my Mother gave birth to Dennis. A few months into the marriage my Mother's Father became suspicious about who my Mother had married because when she applied for income through the Air force [I think it was called an "Allotment"] and the application was rejected my Grandfather & my two uncles further investigated and found that my Mother’s husband was a bigamist and had married my Mother under a false name. He used his correct surname ["Newton"] but used a different christian name [Arnold George] on their marriage certificate. They were married by the Rev. E.A. Pederick at the Enfield Methodist Church, where he stated he was a bachelor on November 22, 1941. He was arrested and It went to court and he was sent to jail for two years for bigamy. He was already married [not divorced] and was not born interstate as stated in the marriage certificate, but born in SA. He was living two lives - one life married to Daisy Rita Newton of Hardy Street Norwood with eight children, and a second life illegally married to my Mother. He joined the RAAF on April 22, 1940 and deserted from the Flying Training School in SA where he was an Aircraftsman in the RAAF, but never served overseas. He married Daisy Rita Round on 30th August 1930 at St. Lukes Church Adelaide and had eight [8] children with Daisy.
Children: H. Newton, K. Newton, V. Newton, B. Newton, P. Newton, B. Newton, R. Newton & K. Newton.
Herbert John Newton had a total of thirteen children [13]. Eight with Daisy, your father, Dennis, with my Mother [Florence] and four more children with Doreen, his last wife. I found a number of newspaper articles regarding the Court trial [one being about half a page] in the Adelaide Advertiser. The one mentioned here was a short one you can look up on the TROVE website.
“AIRMAN CHARGED WITH BIGAMY Remanded, And Bail Refused
The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954) Wednesday 29 July 1942 p 8 Article”
I think it was also published in the Melbourne Truth newspaper as this was big news in those days. This is how I know all the above facts as our Mother only told us that she had married a man who she found out later was a bigamist. That certainly was not her fault.
My Mother never got over this and losing her baby. In 1942 this was a real scandal and after the trial [whilst our Mother was pregnant and not well] our Mother was sent to the country to have her baby and get away from all of the newspaper publicity. Reporters were still hounding the family as my Grandfather was well known in business.
My Mother met and married my Father a number of years later in her late 30's and had myself, my twin sister and my brother. My Father was divorced from a previous marriage where his first wife was not faithful. As mentioned, after my Mother passed away I dug out the Funeral Notice newspaper clipping and as I had done a lot of Family Tree research on my Father's side I did some research and found that your father had passed away. I decided to take my cousin's advice and "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" as your Father had passed away and I decided that it would not be appropriate to pursue the research any further.
My Mother's maiden name was Florence Julia Harrison, born 26 June 1912. Dennis's Father's name was Herbert John Newton, and his first wife Daisy Rita Newton [nee Round] divorced him after the trial. I recently found out [Googling today] that Herbert John Newton must have moved to Victoria and married Doreen Mary Ellen Durack on 16th February 1944 and had four more children. He was born 10th of November 1910 and died on 29th of May 1970 Melbourne North, Victoria, age 59. There are two photos of Herbert John Newton on Ancesrty.com if you Google Doreen Mary Ellen Newton nee Durack.

Your Father had total of fifteen [15] half siblings via his biological parents. Eight half siblings via Herbert’s children he had with Daisy, four half siblings via Herbert’s children he had with Doreen and three additional half siblings via his biological Mother [my Mother] Florence.

At least you know now why your biological Grandmother [my Mother] gave your Father up for adoption. I also saw the other post from a brother of your Father [he may also have been adopted] & I gather they may have lost contact. I hope this post has provided you with some closure about your Father's parents. My Family & I want to remain anonymous, as 1942 is such a long lifetime ago, we are totally separate families, but I thought I should at least pass on this information, as my Mother gave me the Funeral Notice of your Father's adopted Father for a reason, if only to know the true facts and that my Mother did not want to give up her baby son and also for closure to your family. I hope you can respect my families wishes to remain anonymous. Feel free to respond to this message. I would love to see a photo of your Father and your family. If you want a photo of your biological Grandmother, please let me know & I can attach it. Mum was rather a beautiful lady inside and out.
Very kind regards
Carmel
