Hi
I wondered if anyone can help, I have just received the military records for my Great Uncle - Alexander Dawson. Alexander server with the Royal Engineers and was captured at Dunkirk and unfortunately was shot in November 1944 attempting to escape from Stalag IXC. The records state that he was mentioned in despatches and I have subsequently found the entry in the London Gazette (as below). I'd like to know why he was mentioned and have contacted the RE museum but they haven't been very helpful they haven't even told me if they hold the records but if I'd like to make an appointment to research or pay someone to do it I'm more than welcome!
War Office, 16th April 1945
The King has been graciously pleased to approve posthumous awards of Mentions in Despatches to the following in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the field :-
Corps of Royal Engineers
4275247 Spr. A. DAWSON
Can anyone shed some light on where I may find the records please?
Much appreciated
Tracey
