WW1 - Royal Scots Dragoons and Greys

The only information I have about my paternal grandfather James McManus bn c.1891 is that during WW1 he served with the Royal Scots Dragoons and then the Royal Scots Greys. He married my grandmother, Lily Flintoft, in 1915 when he was based in Fulford Barracks in York. Therefore I have no idea where he was born and raised. I have his medal roll details which confirms his regiment and the marriage certificate states his father was John McManus Rancher which was unexpected. I tried contacting the Royal Scots museum in Edinburgh to find out where the regiment mainly recruited from but have not had any reply. Brick wall as he became estranged from the rest of the family some time in the early 1920s. Any ideas where to go now?
