5-Pointed Star Medal Identification

Hoping someone can tell me something about the medal my ancestor is wearing in the photo attached.

Unfortunately, it wasn't scanned at a very high resolution so it is difficult to make out any detail but it appears to be a five-pointed star attached to his vest. I do not even know if it is military but thinking perhaps it is as he would have been the right age to have served in the American Civil War, probably in the Union army out of northern Missouri.

Any help is appreciated.

Providing more information, such as when and where in the world your ancestor was born and lived will make it easier for someone to help.

Looks like it could be a Grand Army of the Republic G.A.R. medalion/badge.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Army_of_the_Republic for details of the G.A.R. and image of medalion.
