I am looking for help finding a casualty record for a relative with the surname Bugaj. He was born in Tapesovo, Orava, Slovakia. I looked at the posts on this message board. I did a search for Bugaj and looked at the each of the pages with this title "Verlustliste ausgegeben am Periodical Page" at http://kramerius.nkp.cz/kramerius/Welcome.do but did not find any of the individuals with the name Bugaj listed that fit what I know. I know one of my grandmothers siblings died in World War I - not sure of his name but think it might be (Stephen) Istvan Bugaj.
Among my mothers siblings, I believe one did not come to the US who remained in Slovakia later to died in WWI.

If you point me in the right direction, I will look in the files. Thanks for your help and guidance.

Rosanna,
I looked in several data bases including Kramerius and another one in Austria and did not find a casualty report for a Istvan (Stephen, Stefan) Bugaj. I also searched by the name of his birth location which in Hungarian was called Tyapesso (now Tapesovo, SK.) and did not find anyone with a surname of Bugaj. There were casualty reports for men from this town but not named Bugaj.

Hi Rosanna,
there is a Stephan BUGAI in Volume 1915 Issue 5.6.1915 in page 9.
"Bugai Stephan, Inft., kriegsgef. (Simbirsk, Russland)" (infantryman, captured)
Unfortunately there is no residence and birth date, so you can not check if it is only misspelled or a totally different person.

In the period of WWI the died persons were also registered in the civil registration - based on the notifications of army units to the civil administration (not on the periodical summarized casualty reports we have). So there is a chance to find him there.

I just found some new information - I cannot make it all out - but this is a Church record from the books of Lokca Slovakia for Stephan Bugaj. This record was copied in 2 parts. His record is the line that is the fourth from the bottom of the page. There is something in the far right of the Church record that notes Stephen Bugaj married a woman with the surname Kajanek on 8 July 1909. It looks like Stephan died on 2 Dec 1914 in a Reserve Hospital. Can you make out the city? Is there other sources to use this new information to find out more? I know this is not the best copy. This Church book is not online because there are individuals on the film that were born after 1896. This is a copy of a jpeg file from a cousin who copied all of the records on that file. I may need to see if he can look at it again and make a better copy. I know its a film permanently at his local FHL center. Thanks!

Can you look at the files I just posted that have more clues about Stephen Bugaj? Its in this message thread in a reply prior to your reply. Anymore places to look for more information is appreciate. I can't quite make out where he died but it looks like he died on 2 Dec 1914. Thanks!
