I am trying to trace my family tree at the moment and what you said rang bells.
Not sure if you will get this years later, however...
My great-great-grandfather was John Whetton and he was from Overseal, born there in c.1863 (in answer to the person asking about Swadlincote, it's a stone's throw from it). His son was Charles Henry Whetton, who moved to Albert Village and married Fanny Mary Jane Williamson from Stapenhill, Burton upon Trent. Their son, also Charles, was killed in the war age 25 in 1945. My mother, Rona Smith, was born in 1942 and Charles never made it back to see her or marry her mother (Edna Mary Smith) - she might have been the illegitimate birth you mentioned?
