I see from the Sussex/Warren County Titus thread there are others looking for the Passaic County Titus line. I too have been researching that line as my 3rd great grandmother is Mary Titus (b. about 1800, d. about 1879) who married Martin Sehulster. I've done quite a bit of research and I believe the Sussex/Warren line are from the English Quaker Titus' line, but the Passaic County Titus' are from the Dutch Reformed side.
The first Passaic Titus I find is Samuel who according to the 1790 census owns 36 acres of improved land, 30 acres of unimproved land, 2 horses, and three cattle. Samuel is also listed on the 1793 tax list. I find a Jno and a Samuel Titus who signed “Two petitions, 4 Oct 1796, to the “Gouvernor”, etc., from inhabitants of the Townships of Saddle River and Franklin suggesting that the upper part of the two townships be divided into a new township.” It was and the new township was named Pompton. A John, Samuel, and William are all listed on Pompton tax list for 1797. John Titus appears again in the 1800 census as owning no land, only two horned cows.
On the Dutch Reformed side, I found in the records of the Pompton Plains Reformed Church Elizabeth Titus who married Jacob Robberson on July 23, 1797 and a son Peter born to Andrew Titus and Mary Row on July 23, 1814. And there are also several Titus' buried at the Pompton Dutch Reformed Church who I believe died in the mid 1800's although the dates on the stones are largely illegible. (They can be found on findagrave.com.) The names used, especially Tunis or Theunis as it sometimes appears, are also indicative of a Dutch rather than English origin.
Lots of information, but I can't find all of the links to know who Mary Titus' father was and more about the family with certainty. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
