My name is Brendan O'Brien from Bohola, County Mayo in Ireland. Our local catholic church in Bohola County Mayo is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

The church was built in 1863/64 and was dedicated in May 1864, It seems that the cost of building the church, (4,000-5,000 pounds at the time !!) was donated by Philip Taaffe,

He was one of a number of Taaffe landholders in east Mayo/Roscommon at the time. I have compiled some limited information on him and his extended family from other sources, it seems the Taaffes were a very significant family in the county at the time.

As well as having his country house in Woodfield (near Swinford) County Mayo he had a house in Gloucester Street Dublin and later in Rostrevor Terrace, Rathgar, Dublin.

It seems from on-line records (and I CANNOT confirm these are correct ones) he was married to a Margaret Smith, he may have had three children; Margaret 1850, ? 1854, and James Joseph 1857.

Philip Taaffe was born abt 1807 and died in Dublin in January 1871, he is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery Dublin.

Philip Taaffe’s death was reported in the Freemans Journal on 17th January 1871 and The Cork Examiner on Thursday January 19th 1871 as follows:

“Taaffe – Jan. 15, at Rostrevor terrace, Rathgar, Philip Taaffe, Esq. Second son of the late Henry Edmond Taaffe, of Woodfield, county Mayo”.

If appropriate I would like to share some information with you to see if we can build up a more complete history, especially if there are any descendants of Philip Taaffe

(I have no family connection with Taaffes, just a local 'amateur historian' trying to build a piece of history).

Any help/suggestions appreciated..

Brendan O'Brien
