Believe it or not, there was not the first "Steiner" from which all have descended - as it most likely derived from an occupation - and of a need to add last names as society became more complex. From the Biblical sense there was Jesus of Nazareth, Saul of Tarsus, etc, but no Saul Tarsus, or at least King James i didn't record it that way.

So, when folks are seeking relatives, give the cemetery data - birth and death, perhaps the region (Ohio is awfully large) - might break it down to "near Cleveland", occupation, and for those in the 1700s and 1800s at least, their religious affiliation. When one mentions Switzerland, try to narrow it down to which Canton - ie state. Bern is both a city, and a province. Its pretty easy to find - and sometimes there are many towns with the same name - Ibach, Switzerland - there are three of them - the most famous is the town from which the Swiss army knife is manufactured.

Then make an attempt to do a web search on your family - for the Steiners, look under the talvacchio site. Another site for those from the Canton of Bern, Switzerland and the Alsace in France is www.omii.org. There are over 1.5M records in seven databases.

Any genealogist should have a good map of Switzerland next to his computer. The Rand McNally map of Switzerland, available at most Borders' or Barnes and Noble book stores, is a good one and has much of the Alsace on it as well.
