1860 Census: Thomas B was only a farmhand or servant in the Pike county home of Willam Simmons (Simons) and (Margaret) Francis in the 1860 census - William was 52, Francis was 40 and Jesse was 2 or 3. Thomas was 23. There were several small Simmons kids, too.

It's more likely that this Thomas B. Carroll Jr. was William Albert Simmons's step son and a member of the family.
