I found James in the 1880 census, page 2, ED # 143, living at 785 Geneses street in Buffalo, NY with Barbara and Rose who was 6 years old then, Edward age 11 and Josephine age 2. It states James came from France and Barbara born in NY but her parents were born in Germany. I hope this helps you.
