I noticed your post in Ancestory, I am a cousin of Sue Hembury-Kellow that you have been corresponding with.
Wiveliscombe and Woolscombe are actually the same place! Wiveliscombe (Wivey to the locals) is the way it is spelt. The pronunciation nowadays would be "Wiv-a-lis-cum". However, in the time period we are looking at and the heavy Somerset accent that most ag workers had it would have sounded like Woolscombe when what they were really saying was more like "Wiv-vuls-comb" that the nearest I can get when trying to write it.
I have actually researched William as he is not part of my direct line, another Saffin (James) was also transported to Australia about 12 years later. I think there were a few black sheep in the Saffin family.
There were numerous Saffins in Wivey and they are quite confusing as they all seem to have 6 or more children and William, John and James popular for the boys and Emily, Jane and Ann for the girls and of course many born the same year and all christen in the same place. Apart from the ones sent to Australia courtesy of court system most of them lived and died in the same area!
Anyway, I don't that this will help but I hope so. If there are any other Saffins you are looking for let me know as I may have them in my tree. If I do find William is related I will let you know.
