Richards morphing into Richardson?

I was just wondering how many of you have encountered the Richardson name morphing from/into Richards. Obviously I understand the whole "Richard's son" meaning etc., and I know that in the past last names were not as "stable" as they are today. But still, I was just wondering if you have personal examples of this happening with Richards/Richardson.
I have traced my Richardson line back to the late 1700s in the fishing village of Brixham, England, but there the records seem to hit a brick wall. I *think* I may have found the reason for my difficulties in going further back - the man who was known as Stephen Richardson when he married in 1790 *may* have been known as Stephen Richards at birth. But I'm going to have to dig further.
