The majority of the Arms are those that are officially recorded in Scotland at the Lyon Court (1672-1973). However, some families were not very good at registering their Arms as required by Scottish law. Therefore, there may be other Arms in use of some antiquity, however, they are not technically legal in Scotland until recorded, or matriculated, with the Court of Lord Lyon.

In addition to those recorded in Scotland there are a number that are recorded in England and Ireland. However, the sources used are, at best, semi-official.

It must be noted that the Arms displayed are the property solely of those named or their descendants. They cannot be used by anyone else, even if they do share the same surname.
