Hi Brent, Thank you for your message in reply to mine of quite some time ago. The following is what I had gleaned from Encyclopaedia Britannica a few years back. You might like to cast your eye over it and make your own comments. I have looked at the Currie Clan web pages briefly quite some time ago. Correct me should I be wrong - but I understand that there really is no oiginal Clan Currie in Scotland. The current Clan had its foundations in the USA of more recent times? I will look at it again as soon as I can get the time to do so. Best wishes and regards,
George Currie - Methven, New Zealand
THE NAME ‘CURRIE’
(Obtained from research done with the Encyclopaedia Britannica Library Research Dept.)
The family of “CURRIE†is believed to have originated from Ireland around 400AD, hence the spelling CURRY. A sector of the family group broke off around 800AD and moved to Scotland. It seems to be at this time the Scottish spelling of CURRY name was developed 1200 years ago by adding the Scottish Mc. Its Scottish spelling was derived originally from variations of the name McCURRICH and McVURRICH. With time that moved onto McVURRIE. Again modification was done to a change to McRURRIE Then of the more recent 500 years the development of CURRIE came about. The ‘C’ being the remains of ‘Mc’.
CURRIES were never landowners in Scotland, but generally were the Workers, Bards, Jesters and Jokers of their Scottish Clans. At the time of the industrial revolution the people like the Curries left their region of living in the Western Isles and moved down to Glasgow for the money received in ship building and other industries. Hence the name Currie is very common in the Glasgow phone book and the region surrounding the city and south. Today there is a supermarket chain in Glasgow and a large interstate transport company both called Curries. In fact there is a small town called “Currie†just SW of the City of Edinburgh. Currie is 2km along the A70 highway from the big A720 motorway, as an outer suburb on the boundary of Edinburgh City. There is a large telecommunications tower positioned near to Currie. There is also a strong Rugby Club in Edinburgh called Currie Rugby Club.
Their Scottish Clan is the McDonald of Clanranald Clan, of which they can wear the McDonald of Clanranald tartan. This tartan has deep blue and red with yellow stripe through it. They also have a connection to the McPherson Clan and can wear the tartan of that Clan as well. This tartan is more scarlet red with a yellow striped pattern to it. The McDonald of Clanranald territory is north of Glasgow along the western part of Scotland and the islands out in the Western Isles. The Clanranald Clan developed from Ranald the son of the first McDonald. The first McDonald gave his son a large portion of the early McDonald Clan territory due west including the coastal part and the Western Isles.
