Hi "DAN" et al; I'm convinced that you're all correct in assuming that the parents of Robert P. McGrew are NOT Nathan and Angeline McManamy. Speaking of which . . . Robert and his family appear in the 1850 census living in Island Creek Twp, Jefferson Cty, OH. Sometime during the next decade the family moved to PA. To reiterate something from my original post, I think the family can be found on the 1860 census under the name Robert McGreen. They're living in West Salem Twp., Mercer County, PA and that would answer the question of why only two of their children, Willard and Mary Elizabeth, have a birth place of PA, while the rest of the family were born in Ohio. The 1870 census finds the family back in OH and living in the Third Ward of Steubenville.

Recently I requested a death certificate for Willard Lee McGrew from Florida. I was trying to verify his parentage. It states that he was born on June 1, 1856 in Mercer County, PA and died on Aug. 16, 1940 in Tampa, FL were he had resided for 28 years. His father's name is listed as Willard McGrew, birthplace unknown, and his mother's maiden name is Mary Chambers, birthplace unknown. The information was given by his wife, (Ida)Eva. His occupation was 'mechanic' and he was employed by Otis Elevator Co. I'm not satisfied with the information on his fathers' name so I've sent for a birth certificate from PA. I'll keep you informed.

I also have a marriage document for my great grandfather, Willard Lee McGrew, who I'm trying to connect to Robert and Mary Ann (Chambers) McGrew. It states that he and Caroline Broadman were married on Feb. 8, 1883 in Rochester, PA by the pastor of the First Baptist Church. Their place of residence is listed as Steubenville, OH. Caroline had immigrated from Germany in 1880 at the age of twenty-one, according to census records. Since the marriage took place after the 1880 census, and the 1890 census was destroyed, there's a seventeen year gap before I can find any information on the family. After much searching a "Karoline Mecgraw" showed up on the 1900 census as a widow with four children. It's definitely my great-grandmother and she also is listed as a widow in the Pittsburgh city directories through about 1916. However, the family appears in the 1910 census with Willett McGrew as head of household. It's a mystery but I'm wondering if Willard divorced Caroline and she chose to consider herself a widow? It's possible that he remarried a woman named Ida Eva sometime before 1920, because I find the couple on the 1920 census.
Any comments are welcome on this information.
