Hi Richard,
I am definitely not a descendant of William of Monmouth NJ, as my line appears to originate in Norfolk (England) around 1600 and my haplogroup is currently designated as I2b1* (cont 2a?).
I have long been trying to recruit male Laytons to my Y-DNA project (
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/LAYTONsurnameUK/default....) with the aim of identifying British LAYTON/LEIGHTON lines and their regions of origin - unfortunately with little success to date. In an offline database I do, however, have some odd results from Leslie LAYTON and Robert F LAYTON, who believe that they are descended from a William LAYTON (supposedly b abt 1630 Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England - the possible LAWTON connection?). If you know of any other LAYTONs who have tested or might be interested in testing their Y-DNA, perhaps you could kindly put them in touch with me?
I would be most interested in hearing your current views on your family's origins.
Yours,
Ian G. Layton (northern Sweden)
