The Langdon family, and the name Gilbert Langdon in particular, seem to weave in and out of my research of my family.
My sources are the IGI and various wills.
From the IGI, I believe that the parents of the Rev Gilbert Henry Langdon (1780-1840) were Gilbert Langdon and Elizabeth. Elizabeth could be the daughter of the Rev John Plowman of Tolpuddle in Dorset. In John’s will he leaves his living of Burleston in Dorset to Elizabeth and her children. Gilbert Henry Langdon is described as the “Rector of Burleston with Athelhempston in the County of Dorset and Perpetual Curate of Rotherwick and Weston Patrick in the County of Southampton†at the National Archives where a copy of his will is held - (
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-r...).
From the IGI again, Gilbert Henry had a son also called Gilbert Henry Langdon (1805-1851). His will is also at the National Archives (
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-r...) where he is described as the Vicar of Oving in Sussex. This Gilbert Henry Langdon is listed as a trustee of the estate of Frances Louisa Plowman (nee Taunton) in 1857 and her mother Agnes Taunton (nee Williams of Herringston) in 1844. (Frances was married to Henry Plowman, grandson of the Rev John Plowman of Tolpuddle.)
Now going back in time to two earlier appearances:
The will of Elizabeth Plowman (d.1721), widow of the Rev William Plowman & mother of John of Tolpuddle, mentions her daughter Ann Langdon and her grandson William Langdon. The IGI lists the marriage of an Ann Plowman to a Gylbard Langdon in 1707. It also lists a William Langdon (1707 – 1781), son of Gilbert & Ann, as marrying a Jane Weare.
The Rev John Plowman of Tolpuddle had a son John who was the vicar of Toller Porcorum. He in turn had a son John Warren Plowman (half brother of Henry Plowman mentioned above). John Warren Plowman (1771-1798) was the vicar of Stogursey and married Anna Langdon, youngest daughter of the Rev Gilbert Langdon of Milton Abbey. An Ann Plowman, widow, married Samuel Fitzherbert of the parish of Chideock Dorset, 31-Mar 1802 by licence at Milton Abbey.
I would be interested to hear if this ties in with anyone else’s research. In particular, I would like to identify all descendants of these Plowman & Langdon marriages.
Regards
Stephen Plowman
