My great grandfather came from Handlova, Slovakia, I don't know what year he came over. I talked to a missionary from there, he said his last name was spelled kmet and they added the z at ellis island. I know they lived in the Chicago area for a while then they moved to Crawford County, Ks to work in the coal mines. He had 5 sons and 2 daughters. The 5 brothers all served in WWII, all came home.

No one added a Z at Ellis Island since the shipping manifest were written at the port of departure.

Hello,

do you have some more information on your ancestor? I have quite a lot of information on people (including the family name Kmety) from Handlova from the time around 1650 to 1900 that could maybe help you out. But as said before i need some more information on your great grandfather (birthdate, firstname, name of wife ...) to identify him correctly.

Regards,
R. Weiss

Oh .. and btw .. i guess the 'z' in the name is just a mistake ...the correct letter as far as i know would be 'y' so that the name would be KMETY (at least i never steped over any Kmet or Kmetz in Handlova/Krickerhau till now!).
