My research indicates that both are true. It appears that the Kerbs family was one of many German families that were invited by Catherine the Great of Russia to farm a part of the Volga area, the families migrated and lived surrounded by German settlers. I can't find any indication that they remained 100% German or that they mixed with the Russians, but they did inherit some of their customs...Perhaps even explaining the Kerbs/Krebs debate.
