I think I'm going to assume that he was born Charles Samuel Hill, Emily's marriage to James Oxford she's down as living in 8 Princes Square, I can't deny the link between him and Emily/Tom Hopgood so it's the only puzzle that makes any sense if he was born in that household?
Was name changing common? I wonder why they did it, my 3rd great grandmother Emily Amy that he married was born Emily Sarah. I guess there was no paperwork needed for name changing in that time.
So this must be him,

We haven't heard of the epilepsy, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there.
I might try look into this army record - and order a birth cert but being in NZ that's going to take 4-6 weeks.
It's funny with the Indian army thing if that is him, we were always told a story from my g-grandmother about a British Solider in India, perhaps this is that story. They also told us he bought home an Indian wife, but there's no record of that so was probably muddled on the way down the line, but (my photo attached to Charles and Emily) physically their kids had black hair, and darkish skin but can't track that bloodline anywhere.
