Pensioner from the late 1600s

So I've come to a bit of a stumbling block in the Gray family line....

I have information on a John Gray who "moved from England among the former settlers" my guess would be around the late 1670s, but not confirmed.

I do not have his birth date or death date. He was born in England and died in the US, most likely Massachusetts.

I know he was in the British Navy, lost an arm, and was receiving half-pay.

I know he got to America by 1679, as he did have a son in that year in Massachusetts.

I was wondering where I could go to look for pensioners during this time? My guess would be the 3rd Anglo-Dutch War because he was navy and that war had plenty of naval battles, but I am making a 100% guess on that.

I've also heard about a cap/thimble that was kept over the arm that was, apparently part of tradition for amputees, passed down to some of his children or grandchildren.

Any guesses or directions for research would be welcome!
