I wonder if your Bertha Goldstein was the one who arrived at New York on 23 Sep 1857 on the ship Indiana. Her birth year is given as about 1840 with an age of 17. Her place of origin is given as "Launy". I have no idea where that is, but I wonder if it is a corruption of "Milawa"? Bertha appears to traveling alone, but her father could have come over earlier.
Coincidently, I'm looking for a Solomon Goldstein (Goldstine) from the same era and close origin (Prussia) and possibly a Bertha (not his wife). These are different people. Solomon and his wife Louisa (from Bavaria) are found in Meadville, Pa in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Censuses (last name spelling varies). My wife's great-grandfather was Abe Wollstein, born in Philadelphia about 1864 from parents Sello Caleb? Wollstein and his wife Bertha. Bertha died in 1876 and Sello in 1877 leaving the children orphans. Some or all of them resided in the Jewish Home there for a while with Pauline Woolstein (spelled that way) still there in 1880 at age 10. At some point in the early 1880's, Solomon Goldstein and his wife (if still living at the time) collected the Wollstein family and moved to Kentucky. Family tradition is that the Wollstein's and the Goldstein's were related, but that is what I'm trying to prove. Perhaps Sello's wife Bertha was a Goldstein, or maybe there was no relation at all. Of course, any information about my puzzle would be most welcome.
