Three Gladden Brothers

I have heard the same story for a while and wanted to see if anyone has information. The story is that three Gladden brothers came to America and then split up. My ancestor was Thomas C Gladden born in 1832 around the Kings Mountain area.

I was told that one brother was in prison (don't know if it was Ireland or Scotland) and the other two broke him out and came to America. One brother went to Arkansas and one to Texas (the one I am descended from) and I don't know where the other went. I would like to find out more about where they came from and when and what their names were.

The same basic story seems to abound in lots of families. Here is some things I have found on the Gladden line. Who knows what is right or wrong-----The Gladdens supposedly came from Ireland about 1640, but nothing has proven that to this line for sure. They were originally from Wales and went to Ireland, married wives there and became involved in the revolution along with a brother-in-law (?)One brother was caught and charged with murder, but the others got him out and they got on a ship for America. Sounds like a typical family tale to me. Gladdens were found in NC and SC. Another story says they were English and Baptist. Another says they were Quaker.
Many Gladdens were red headed and that is supposed to have come from the Kimberlin line. A John Gladden did land at Plymouth MA in 1640, but a connection is not known to our line., There is a book "Recollections" by Rev. Washington Gladden. He was a descendant of John.---
I can go back to Hugh Gladden born 1738 and married Jane McCleary. These were my 5th great grandparents. I can trace them from PA to Scott Co. IN to Polk Co MO where we still have many of the Gladden family.

My line of Gladdens are the NC\SC Gladdens. I have some documents from the Baptist church he was a deacon in. But most of the people in that area were Presbyterians converted to Baptist. I can only trace my line back to 1832 with Thomas C Gladden. His mother remarried a Robert Gaston soon after his sister was born, so it is very muddled.

There is John Gladding who was one of the original settlers of Newbury MA. I don't know about any Gladden in Plymouth, maybe they mean the one in Newbury. There is a First Families of Newbury and John Gladding is listed. He married Elizabeth Rogers and gave his age as 37 when he took oath of allegiance in 1678. No one knows where or when he was born but it's estimated at 1641 in England.

They left MA after the Indian Wars and he was the first settler of Bristol RI. There were many children and many became prosperous and well known. There is a Gladding House in Bristol and there are portraits in the Historical Society.

There has been much speculation about the youngest son, Joshua, much confusion about his name and whether he was three different people! Confusing due to lack of information. A professional genealogist settled the matter in an article in The American Genealogist (: Janet Ireland Delorey, "Revisiting John^1 Gladding of Newbury, Massachusetts and Bristol, Rhode Island," The American Genealogist, 77 (July 2002, October 2002): .

She answered my query as to the probability that this John Gladding is the father of the Joshua Gladding in Saybrook CT who was The Blacksmith. She told me that there is no PROOF but there is enough circumstantial evidence that they are the same person My family apparently comes from this Joshua although I have a brick wall as to whether his son Joshua was the father of my Azariah Gladding.

As to the mentioned Washington Gladden, he comes from this same line and is related to me. He lived in Easthampton MA and is buried in Northampton, I think. I saw his gravestone, I think it was Northampton. He was a minister and wrote for the Springfield MA newspapers. He did not know for certain (just as we do not know) whether he was related to the Gladdings of Bristol RI.

There is a old Gladding Book that is wrong in many places. We need to know more about the Gladding/Gladden family, in particular, the descendants of Joshua who went to Connecticut. The family members who remained in Rhode Island are well documented and one of their descendants is Geo. Bush.

Do you know if your family line ever migrated to the south? I am at a dead end currently at the Civil War.
