I've found that there are often creative spellings of names based on their pronounciation. The farther back you go there seems to be more cases of the name spelling changing so there are often a number of spellings of a common root name. I don't know if Gill and Gale are necessarily related in this way but it beleivable that they could be especially if you think of some of the accents that might have been involved in speaking the name
