My Geake ancestors were from Lamerton in Devon (not far from the border with Cornwall). My gt gt gt grandmother was Sophia Geake, born 1821 if anyone has her in their family history. I live about 6 miles from Lamerton and went across to the cemetry recently in search of 'long lost Geakes' but only found a few. Perhaps they were also from Cornwall before this?

My ancestor was Roger Pawley Geake b. 23 Jan 1825 Stoke Climsland Parish, Cornwall. He married 13 Mar 1849 at East Stonehouse, Devon to Mary Ann Doidge. I have more information on the Geake side if you are interested. I would like to know more about the Doidge side. Robert Geake, Northville, Michigan, USA

Robert,

My husband is descended from John GEAKE & 2nd wife, Mary BAKER of Egloskerry area.

But, the 2 of you also share ancestry on Roger Pawley GEAKE's maternal side ~ His mother, Mary PAWLEY was the d/o John PAWLEY & Elizabeth UGLOW and my husband is also descended from UGLOWs.

Which of Roger Pawley GEAKE's sons are you descended from? I would love to share info :-)

I was so pleased to find these replies this morning. My apologies for not replying to you before, Robert. I hadn't realised you'd written.

I'd be very happy to share information with you both, although I don't have a great deal. What might also be useful to you both is that I live on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park so am in fairly close proximity to the places you've mentioned. If you know of any addresses or places that you'd like photos of to see where your ancestors lived, I'll be happy to travel there and email them to you.

My only Geake relative that I'm aware of so far is Sophia Geake, born in 1821 in Lamerton, Devon. On her marriage certificate to William Doidge (who was 15 years her senior) it is marked that she is under age and her father's name has been left blank. My guess is that her famiily were unhappy about the marriage, although one of the witnesses was a John Geake. I have no idea of whether he's a brother or cousin etc.

I'd be so delighted if it works out that my Geake/ Doidge ancestors are the same as yours!

Paula,

I'm sorry that I can't be of any help to you and I don't see any connection with my husband's GEAKE family of Cornwall or those who went to Devon but I was thrilled to read Robert's post, as he and my husband are most definitely related.

I will keep in mind your Sophia GEAKE born abt 1821 in Lamerton, Devon because some of my husband's various Geake relatives did go there and did have children there.

Dear Dallas
Thank you for the UGLOW connection. That is a new name for my family tree. According to my research, Roger Pawley Geake , my g.g. grandfather who died May 22, 1881 in Toronto had three children: Richard Geake, who married Susan Page, William Geake who married Mary Ann Bell and from whom I am descended, and Sarah Elizabeth Pawley Geake who married William J. Linton. Please feel free to email me at RRGeake@aol.com and we can share more data.

How far are you from the little place of Dunterton??

I found 2 baptisms last night for children of George GEAKE & wife Mary ....

1814 Apr 3rd Digory George & Mary GEAKE Dunterton Parishioner of Lamerton Labourer

1816 Mar 12th Jane George & Mary GEAKE Dunterton Parishioner of Lamerton Labourer

Also interesting that John GEAKE was a witness to sister Sophia GEAKE's marriage!

Now father George is described as 'labourer' at Digory and Jane's baptism and also on the marriage record for John GEAKE & Betsy HONEY in 1845. [I found this at the records for OPCs - Cornwall (Online Parish Clerks), a volunteer group who offer FREE look-ups in any of the parishes they cover as they have usually transcribed all the records for that parish!

I am presently waiting for a response from the OPC for Dunterton and Lamerton regarding other children for George & Mary GEAKE, mentioned above!

I have discovered the father of your Sophia GEAKE!

It was George GEAKE born abt 1788 in Lamerton, Devon and married to Mary [last name not known at present]. He appears to have had a brother named Digory GEAKE born abt 1786 in Lamerton.

I found 2 baptisms at Dunterton, near Lamerton for these children whose parents are given as George & Mary of Lamerton:

1814 Apr 3rd Digory George & Mary GEAKE Dunterton Parishioner of Lamerton Labourer
1816 Mar 12th Jane George & Mary GEAKE Dunterton Parishioner of Lamerton Labourer
[Jane was buried Dec 25 1817 in Lamerton]

George & Mary appear to have also had the following as well, all born Lamerton:

William b abt 1810
George b abt 1812
Digory 1814
Jane 1816
Mary b abt 1820
Sophia b abt 1821
John b abt 1824

George was with daughter Mary GEAKE Dashper in 1861 and 1871 Census and that's how I found him!

He died in 1872 and it would be great to check out his death date by getting a certificate and then a burial could likely be found :-)
