I don't have the exact details of his death, but this is what I can tell you. After his mother died when Allen was around 3 years of age, he lived with his maternal grandparents, Albert and Lula Dozier in Richmond, he is enumerated in both the 1930 and 1940 census records. Maybe his father felt he could not maintain employment and have someone take care of him.
Here is specifics of his regiment
Allen P. Moberly Sergeant, U.S. Army Service # 35468273 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division Entered the Service from: Kentucky Died: 7-Jun-44 Buried at: Plot J Row 19 Grave 13 Normandy American Cemetery Colleville-sur-Mer, France Award Purple Heart.
There appears there might be an obituary of some sort out of Boyd County, Ashland, as it shows Sgt. Allen F. Moberly, I'm thinking the F is transcribed wrong from P. It was front page on the July 25, 1944 newspaper which I have not seen yet, and it did take some time before the families were notified from Europe about the War. It does indicate, died in France in the Index.
Such a very nice thing you are doing to honor Allen or others from Madison County, can you keep me informed when you return, I would so very much like to have a picture of his grave, any ceremonies you hold. Thank you Stephanie and your students for this wonderful trip you are making.
I did a bit more research and Allen is noted Died of Wounds, not KIA, no idea if he was injured on the 6th and did the next day, or the day of the 7th.
