Hello Jaycee,

I’m not related and didn’t uncover a lot of information about Samuel, but did find what I believe to be records that pertain to his father Daniel, mother Hannah, and some of his brothers and sister. You may already have this information, but in case you do not, please read on.

I located the church marriage index for Daniel Dougherty and Hannah Nichol at the RootsIreland/Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Antrim. The index shows that Daniel and Hannah were married in the Belfast Catholic Church in 1896. The index further shows that Daniel’s father was James.

The index is below:

With Hannah Nichol as the primary partner in the marriage index, I learned that her father was Samuel Nichol. Please see below:

I don’t know if the names of the mothers of the groom and bride were recorded in the actual marriage record. But you can find out if they were.

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage index for free. But, to obtain a transcription of the marriage you’ll have to purchase a subscription to the IFHF with a credit card.

Go to the following links for more information on prices of the subscriptions available through the IFHF:

https://rootsireland.ie/ifhf/subscribe.php?topup=1

http://rootsireland.ie/ifhf/subscription-faq.php

One advantage of ordering records from the IFHF is that as soon as credit card information is processed, the record is sent to your computer, so that you don’t have to wait very long to view it.

The marriage transcription may tell you the name of the Catholic Church in Belfast where Daniel and Hannah were married and whether or not the mothers of Daniel and Hannah were also recorded. The transcription should also give you the names of the witnesses to the marriage and the name of the parish priest who married Daniel and Hannah.

I next found the individual civil marriage indexes for Daniel Dougherty and Hannah Nichol at the FamilySearch/Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at https://familysearch.org/

The indexes shows their marriage was recorded in Belfast in the June quarter of 1896. As you know the June quarter includes the months of April, May, and June. These are just basic indexes, and so not a lot of information is in them, as you’ll see below:

You can order a copy of the original civil marriage record online from the General Registration Office (GRO) in Ireland. For information about ordering civil birth, marriage, and death records, go to the GRO website link at:
http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/bdm/Certificates/

You can purchase a photocopy of the marriage record from the GRO for only 4 Euros, payable by credit card.

The civil marriage record from the GRO may provide additional information such as where Daniel and Hannah were living before they married, their occupations at the time of the marriage, the church where they were married, as well as the names and occupations of their fathers. The marriage record may also include the name or names of witnesses to the marriage, as well as the name of the clergyman who performed the marriage ceremony.

Civil Registration actually began in Ireland in the year 1845, when the government recorded those communicants of the various Protestant denominations. Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations didn’t commence in Ireland however, until the year 1864. During the early years of Civil Registration, not all births, marriages and deaths were recorded though.

In your communication to the Ancestry.com message board you had mentioned that Samuel’s siblings were Peter, Anthony, James, your grandmother Mary Ann, and Elizabeth. I now wanted to see if I could find the baptism indexes and/or the civil birth indexes for these children.

I located the birth and baptism indexes for the following Doherty/Dougherty children at the IFHF and or LDS websites for: Mary Ann (1896); James (1898); Anthony/Antony (1900); and Rosina/Rose (1904).

Below is the baptism index for your grandmother, Mary Ann Doherty. The index shows she was baptized in St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, Belfast, in 1896.

The baptism transcription form the IFHF should provide you with more details, such as when her baptism took place, the name or names of her godparents or sponsors, and may also include the name of the Catholic priest who baptized her.

Below is what I believe to be the civil birth index from the LDS website for your Mary Ann Dougherty. The index shows her birth was recorded in Belfast for the September quarter of 1896. The September quarter includes the months of July, August, and September. 1896 is the same year her parents were married. But, this is a basic index and does not include the names of her parents:

The marriage indexes for Daniel Dougherty and Hannah Nichol above show their marriage recorded in the June quarter of 1896. That is, they were married in either April, May, or June of 1896. What this indicates is that they married when they did so that their first-born child, Mary Ann, would not have been born out of wedlock. However, before adding this information to your genealogical record, I suggest ordering Mary Ann’s civil birth record from the GRO just to confirm that her parents were Daniel Dougherty and Hannah Nichol.

Mary Ann’s civil birth record will tell you the day and month she was born, where she was born, the address of her parents, which may also have been the address where she was born, and her father’s occupation.

Next are the 1898 IFHF civil birth and church baptism indexes for James Daugherty. The civil birth was recorded in the Urban 2, Belfast CP. The initials CP stand for Civil Parish. In this index Hannah’s maiden name is spelled, “Nicholl.”

The baptism took place in St. Malachy’s Catholic Church. The baptism index spells the child’s surname as “Doherty” but the mother’s maiden name as, “Nichol.”

SAMUEL DOUGHERTY

Your information shows that Samuel Dougherty was born on September 22, 1901. September is in the September quarter of the year.

I now went to the LDS website to see if I could find the birth index of a Samuel Dougherty registered in Belfast for the year 1901. I found one possibility showing the birth of a Samuel Dougherty was recorded in Belfast for the December quarter of 1901. The December quarter includes the months of October, November, and December. I don’t know if this index pertains to your Samuel Dougherty, as his parents are not recorded in the index. But there is the possibility it does as births were not always recorded in the same quarter in which the child was born. I also don’t know if you have Samuel’s civil birth record already.

The index follows:

If you do not already have Samuel’s birth record, You can order it online from the GRO to confirm that his parents were Daniel Dougherty and Hannah Nichol. But again, I’m not sure if the LDS index above refers to your Samuel Dougherty..

I next found 41 year old Daniel Dougherty, his 39 year old wife Hannah, and four of their children in the 1911 Ireland census, living in an address of house 7, Gracehill Street, Clifton, Antrim. I believe this street is now called Gracehill Court and is located in a section of Belfast City. The 1911 census shows Daniel was born in Belfast and was an unemployed flax dresser. Hannah was also born in Belfast. The census further shows that Daniel and Hannah were married for 15 years and in that time had six children, with five of those children still alive. As mentioned earlier only four of those children were in the household with their parents. Samuel is not in the household with his parents, which means he must have been enumerated somewhere else. More about Samuel later.

Getting back to the household of Daniel and Hannah Dougherty, the 1911shows the oldest child in the household is your 14 year old grandmother, Mary Ann, born in Belfast. She is single and employed as a “Mill Doffer,” which means she replaced empty yarn bobbins with full bobbins in a mill. The census also shows she can read and write. Next are 13 year old James, 11 year old Anthony, and 7 year old Elizabeth. These children were also born in Belfast and are listed as “Scholars,” that is, students. James and Anthony are shown to be able to read and write, while Elizabeth can “Read Only.”

The census below is from the National Archives of Ireland website link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

A copy of the original 1911 census for the Dougherty family can be found at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001530394/

At 7 years old Elizabeth would have been born circa 1904. I looked for her birth index at the IFHF website but didn’t find it. I also looked for her birth index at the LDS website, which shows at least six children named Elizabeth Dougherty/Doherty, whose births were recorded in Belfast between 1902 and 1905. None of the indexes gives the names of the parents, and so the search was inconclusive.

Earlier, birth indexes had shown that Rosina/Rose Doherty was born and baptized in 1904, and so I’m wondering if Rose’s middle name may have been Elizabeth, and that she went by the name Elizabeth, rather than Rose.

As you can see above Samuel is not in the household with his parents and siblings at house 7, Gracehill Street. But, I believe I did find 9 year old Samuel in the 1911 census living in the household of 24 year old Peter Dougherty at house 40 in McCleery Street, Dock Ward, Belfast. Samuel is shown to be Peter’s nephew. Samuel is also listed as being born in Belfast City, and a scholar. Peter is the head of the household employed as a bottler in a lemonade store. He, as well the rest of the inhabitants in the house were born in Belfast City. Aside from Samuel, three of Peter’s older sisters are in the household with him. They are 47 year old Jane, employed as a spinner in a linen mill; 29 year old Mary, also employed as a spinner in a linen mill; and 27 year old Catherine, employed as a “stripper” in a tobacco factory. A tobacco stripper strips the center vein out of a tobacco leaves in the manufacture of cigar wrappers.

Like Peter, all the Dougherty sisters could read and write.

The 1911 census for the household of Peter Dougherty is below:

1911 Census of Ireland

Residents of a house 40 in McCleery Street (Dock Ward, Antrim)

To view a copy of the original 1911 census for the household of Peter Dougherty, go to: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001410834/

A Google Map shows the distance from Gracehill Street, or Gracehill Court, where Daniel and Hannah Dougherty and their family were living, to McCleery Street, where Peter Dougherty and his sisters and nephew Samuel were living, is only 1.5 miles. See the Google Map at: http://tinyurl.com/l65nudk

Because Samuel Dougherty is in the household, indications are that Peter, Jane, Mary, and Catherine were Daniel Dougherty’s siblings. The trick now was to see if Daniel Dougherty had siblings that matched the names of those Dougherty adults living in 40 McCleery Street, Belfast.

The 1896 marriage index for Daniel Dougherty shows that his father’s first name was James.

Surprisingly, I found the birth and baptism indexes for Daniel, as well the as the birth and or baptism indexes for nine of his siblings, including those siblings of Peter Dougherty who were living with him in house 40, McCleery Street, Belfast, as enumerated above the 1911 census. The indexes show their father’s first name was James and that their mother’s name was Mary Campbell.

Jaycee, have you come across the surname Campbell at any time when researching your Dougherty clan?

The names and dates of birth or baptism for the 10 Dougherty siblings are: Jane (1863); John (1865); Rosina/Rose (1867); Daniel (1869); Joseph (1871); James (1876); Rosina (1879); Mary (1881); Catherine (1884); and Peter (1886).

When you view the indexes below you see that Jane Dougherty is the only child without a civil birth record. This is because she was born before civil registration for births commenced in Ireland in the year 1864.

You’ll also see two baptisms for Rose/Rosina, one for 1867 and one for 1879. This indicates the Rose born in 1867 had died.

Some things to notice in the indexes which follow:

You’ll see the exact spelling of John’s last name in his 1865 civil birth index, is “Doughterty,” rather than Dougherty.

You’ll also notice that the 1869 birth index doesn’t list the child’s first name. But this is the birth index for Daniel, as his 1869 baptism index immediately follows. His birth was probably recorded before his parents had time to give him a first name.

In the 1876 baptism index for James, you’ll see his mother’s maiden name is spelled, “Cambell,” rather than Campbell.

In the 1879 baptism index for Rosina the surname for her and her father is spelled, “Dogherty.”

You’ll also see that all the other surname spellings for the children is either Doherty or Dougherty.

All the civil births were recorded in one of the Belfast districts. The baptisms for all the children but John took place in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Belfast. John was baptized in St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, Belfast.

After discovering the birth and baptisms above I next wanted to see if James and Mary Dougherty were enumerated in the 1901 census of Ireland. I found 57 year old widower James Dougherty and five of his children in the 1901 census living in an address of house 44, “McLeevy” Street, Dock Ward, Belfast. The name of the street in the census index is McLeevy, when it actually should be McCleery Street. That’s because the name of the street in the census in the Enumerator’s Abstract and Housing and Building Return forms, appears that it could be McCleevy Street. See the following links:

If you recall, the 1911 census shows that Peter Daugherty, his three sisters, Jane, Mary, and Catherine, and their nephew Samuel, were living in an address of house 40, McCleery Street.

You’ll see below in the 1901 census that James is shown to be employed as a flaxdresser, who was born in Belfast. His children were all born in Belfast as well. The census further shows that all in the household can read and write. The Dougherty children are all unmarried, and include: 37 year old Jane, employed as a spinner; 21 year old Rosena, also employed as a spinner; 19 year old Mary, employed as a spinner; 17 year old Catherine, employed as a hemstitcher; and 14 year old Peter, working as a bottle labler.

In the census transcription below from the National archives of Ireland, I’ve corrected the spelling of the street from McCleevy to McCleery:

Concerning Samuel Dougherty, do you know approximately when he was married, and did he marry in Belfast? Also do you know if his wife’s birth name was Mary, or was her name always May? Was their daughter originally called Bridget?

Kind Regards,
